Tips and advice.

There are so many different fabrics available, it's best to begin by choosing a colour, then look at the textures and types of pattern (plain, stripes, checks, geometric, floral, slubs, weaves) and then consider complementary or contrasting colours to set off your main colour. Use swatches of material in the room to see how it all fits together.

Curtains control the light and screen the world outside, when they are open they should frame and enhance the outside view and at the same time complement the interior decor.

Here's a quick guide to calculating the amount of fabric needed for curtains: measure the length you want the curtain to be (either to window sill or floor) allowing 15-25cm or 6-10in for the heading and hems and multiply this by the curtain widths (allow two or three times the width of the window so the folds in the curtain give it a rich and full three dimensional appearance).

For professional advice on window treatments and soft furnishings, you might want to consult an interior designer. Go to Interior Designers.
